Why it costs anything at all.
Because the alternative is worse. A messenger with no revenue has to find some, and the usual answers are advertising, data, or an investor who eventually wants one of those. Tesseract has no analytics, no cookies and no third-party scripts, which only stays true if the thing is paid for by the people using it.
A note on the mailbox. Messages waiting for a recipient who is offline sit encrypted on the relay for up to 72 hours and are discarded after that, on every tier. There is no paid extension of that window, and any earlier claim of one was wrong.
Free is not a trial. There is no countdown and no feature that stops working. If you never pay, encryption, the duress PIN and unlimited messages are still yours. Plus buys routing, timing and screen protection — not the privacy, which is not for sale separately.
